Psa 33.6-22

Psg: Psa 33.6-22 (http://biblia.com/bible/nasb95/Ps33.6)
Date: 4/6/12

Read

33:6 By the Lord’s decree* the heavens were made;
by a mere word from his mouth all the stars in the sky were created.*
33:7 He piles up the water of the sea;*
he puts the oceans* in storehouses.
33:8 Let the whole earth fear* the Lord!
Let all who live in the world stand in awe of him!
33:9 For he spoke, and it* came into existence,
he issued the decree,* and it stood firm.
33:10 The Lord frustrates* the decisions of the nations;
he nullifies the plans* of the peoples.
33:11 The Lord’s decisions stand forever;
his plans abide throughout the ages.*
33:12 How blessed* is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen to be his special possession.*
33:13 The Lord watches* from heaven;
he sees all people.*
33:14 From the place where he lives he looks carefully
at all the earth’s inhabitants.
33:15 He is the one who forms every human heart,*
and takes note of all their actions.
33:16 No king is delivered by his vast army;
a warrior is not saved by his great might.
33:17 A horse disappoints those who trust in it for victory;*
despite its great strength, it cannot deliver.
33:18 Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal followers,* [those who fear him]
those who wait for him to demonstrate his faithfulness*
33:19 by saving their lives from death*
and sustaining them during times of famine.*
33:20 We* wait for the Lord;
he is our deliverer* and shield.*
33:21 For our hearts rejoice in him,
for we trust in his holy name.
33:22 May we experience your faithfulness, OLord,*
for* we wait for you.

Record

YHWH’s decree (6), YHWH’s decisions (11), therefore we should fear him (8. 18).

Reflect

  • Because the Lord is the one who decides (including creation), we should fear him, be in awe of him, wait/hope for him as our deliverer.
    • He has the ultimate decision-making ability.
      • All the decisions made by those who follow him are contained within his decision-making. All the decisions made by those who oppose him are contained within his decision-making. We can decide all we want, but when he decides, it is decided.
      • All of his decisions are good.
      • This is a way to look at sovereignty - he is the ultimate Decider.
    • Given this as a true statement. therefore we should respond.
      • Fear & awe: orienting ourselves rightly with respect to his attributes
      • Waiting on / hoping in him: trusting ourselves to him
  • The Decider is the Faithful One (22).
  • “hope” / “wait” (22)
    • This is not the same thing as waiting around.
    • ESL: 3176 יָחַל [yachal /yaw·chal/] v. A primitive root;TWOT 859; GK 3498; 42 occurrences; AVtranslates as “hope” 22 times, “wait” 12 times, “tarry” three times, “trust” twice, “variant” twice, and “stayed” once. 1 to wait, hope, expect. 1a(Niphal) to wait. 1b (Piel). 1b1 to wait, await, tarry.1b2 to wait for, hope for. 1c (Hiphil) to wait, tarry, wait for, hope for.
    • TWOT: yāḥal occurs eighteen times in the Piel, fifteen times in the Hiphil and three in the Niphal with the idea of “tarrying” and “confident expectation, trust.” The LXX translates it nineteen times with elpizō andepelpizō “to hope.” ASV and RSV translate similarly.
    • DBL: 3498 יָחַל (yā∙ḥǎl): v.; ≡ Str 3176; TWOT 8591.LN 85.55–85.64 (nif) wait for, i.e., extend a period of time in a place or state, implying a hope of resolution to some situation (Ge 8:12); (piel) linger(Mic 5:6[EB 7]); (hif) wait (1Sa 10:8); 2. LN 25.59–25.64 (piel) hope in, expect, looking to, i.e., await eagerly for a future event (Job 13:15); (hif) wait, put hope in (Ps 39:8[EB 7]); 3. LN 13.1–13.47 (nif)wait, i.e., be in a certain state, implying a resolution to the waiting (Eze 19:5), note: for niv text in Ge 8:10; Jdg 3:25, see 2655

Respond

  • Father, forgive me for the ways that I don’t expect you to deliver, and so I end up not waiting on you / hoping in you.
  • You are the Faithful Decider. I can in fact hope in that for all my deliverance. And you will bless me when I do.
  • May all on my list hope in you / wait on you today.
